Bass Guitar Strings! HELP?
8th January 2009
Genesis G asked:
Well I needed to change my strings so days ago I ordered 2 packs of Ernie Ball bass strings (<-- THE BEST ^-^) and now they've arrived. I take out my old strings and I try putting on the new G string. So I'm cutting it and wrapping it around the pegs. I'm twisting and twisting it. I pluck to see if there is some sound but it sounds "weird" then I keep turning then and my string breaks! THEN I try my E string. Ok So I'm twisting and turning and then I stopped cause I was nervous. I pluck the string and it sounds "weird" but when I put my finger on the 12th fret (and up) it sounds "normal" (Luckily I didn't break it) but open string to the 11th fret sounds "weird". What am I doing wrong??? How do you know if the string is tuned???
And please give me some kind of instructions on how to change my strings!!! PLZ

After tuning and changing over 1000 bass guitars and guitars, their is a way of changing strings.
First, DO NOT CUT THE STRING FIRST. Start with the E (big string). Measure 4 inches length. Now wind the entire 4 inch . Once in tune, now cut the string.
Same withthe 3rd, 2nd, 1rst string. Cut only after it is wounded around the post.
The reason you don’t cut it right away it because it affects the winding around the core of the strong itself.
Now, I can see your neck is warped and is curving upwards instead of downward when you look at it from the headstock.
If this is correct, loosen the truss road 1 full turn, and then 1/4 turn at a time. Once the space between neck and strings is approx. 1/8″, you arrived at the proper spacing.
Now the sound should be perfect from fret 1 through fret 22.
